Connecticut Family $1 Million Richer with Power Play
Last year had been a tough one for Kevin and Denise McQuade of Trumbull, having faced one family hardship after another. Then, like so many other people in today’s workplace, Kevin was laid off from his job. Just when things seemed like they couldn’t get any worse, life bestowed some luck upon the McQuade family when Kevin purchased a Powerball with Power Play “Quick Pick” ticket for the January 21, 2009 drawing and won $1,000,000 cash.

“I really couldn’t believe it. The day we found out that we won…I felt like I was walking in a cloud,” Kevin told lottery officials.

For matching all five white balls drawn, the McQuade’s won $200,000. Since McQuade Power Played his ticket, under the new and improved Powerball game that went into effect on January 4, 2009, his base prize was automatically multiplied by 5 for a prize value of $1,000,000!

Believe it or not, there is more to the story. When the McQuade family arrived at lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill to claim their $1,000,000 Powerball with Power Play prize, they found themselves lucky again. While Lottery staff processed their claim, a $1 ticket was purchased for the Lottery’s new “Beginner’s Luck” scratch game to play as they waited. Scratching the ticket, Denise quickly realized she had won again, this time it was the game’s top prize. “I can’t believe it. I think I won $3,000!,” Denise shouted out to family members and to the complete amazement of lottery staff.

The McQuade’s two tickets produced two prize amounts — the original $1,000,000 won playing Powerball with Power Play, and an added $3,000 won on the Beginnner’s Luck ticket purchased at the Lottery offices. CT Lottery officials presented Denise and Kevin with two prize checks totaling $702,850 (the value after taxes) for the two tickets.

0,000 Win For Indiana Group

posted by admin in powerball winners
A group of 36 co-workers at Symmetry Medical in Warsaw got their weekend off to a great start today when they claimed a $200,000 Powerball prize at Hoosier Lottery Headquarters in Indianapolis.

A rowdy, jovial group of 8 third-shift workers claimed the prize on behalf of the whole group. Some of the winners work first or second shifts and were unable to make the trip to Indianapolis.

The group matched five numbers, but not the powerball number, in the Wednesday, January 21, 2009 powerball drawing. Most of the 36 live in Wabash and Kosciusko Counties. The core of the group have been playing Powerball together for more than two years with different people playing different amounts each draw. Some of the winners, like Bryan Bartoo of Lagro and Daniel Walters of Warsaw, were playing for only the first or second time.

The $200,000 prize was divided 36 ways with each person claiming an amount proportionate to their $1, $2, $3 or $4 contribution.   Each co-worker received a prize somewhere between $1,515 and $15,236 before taxes. The group could have been splitting up a $1 million prize if they had purchased the Power Play option for an extra $1. Jeff Foster of Wabash purchased the group’s winning ticket at Village Pantry in Wabash.

He was checking the group’s tickets after the drawing Wednesday night at work when he discovered they had won. “I was pretty excited,” said Foster.  “I was elated.”Foster’s co-workers had a slightly less subdued take on the situation. They laughed and joked about Foster’s initial reaction to winning.

“He was a screaming wild man, running across the shop,” said Bartoo. Most of the group seemed to share the same approach to spending their winnings, although some joked that they haven’t yet told their wives. “We’ll probably help out our families or friends,” said Foster.  “Bryan’s going to put a lift on his truck.”

1st Million Powerball Power Play Winner In Florida Claims Prize

The Florida Lottery has announced that R. T. Johnson, 66, of Palm Beach Gardens, claimed $1 million from the Florida POWERBALL® drawing held on January 21. Johnson is the first Florida POWERBALL with Power Play winner to match 5-of-5 winning numbers. He purchased the winning ticket at City Discount Beverage, located in North Palm Beach.

Johnson is the second Florida player to match five numbers since the game launched in Florida on January 4.  Because he added Power Play for just $1 more, he won $1 million instead of the standard 5-of-5 prize payout of $200,000.  As a recently introduced new feature of the Power Play option, all match 5 white balls with Power Play are automatically multiplied 5X pushing the prize to $1 million cash.

Changes to Powerball…Effective January 4, 2009

On January 4, 2009, the Powerball game changed. Some white ball numbers were added to make the jackpots bigger and some of the red ball numbers were subtracted to create more winners (over 3.5 million more winners per year at the same sales level). The new Powerball will be a 59/39 game.

The Power Play option will continue, except that they will now always draw a 5X for the second prize (Match 5+0). That means that when you win the second prize and have also purchased the Power Play option, your $200,000 will automatically become $1 million; every time. And this prize is paid in cash.

The Power Play option will still offer the chance of drawing the multipliers 2X, 3X, 4X, or 5X for the other set prize levels, but the second prize will never be less than 5X.

They know that most folks only play for the big jackpot, but they want to create many more millionaires in the game so don’t forget to check your ticket for the other prize levels. The starting jackpot will also be bumped from a guaranteed $15 million to a guaranteed $20 million.
